Morena’s National Commission of Honesty and Justice provisionally suspended the political and electoral rights of Sergio Mayer after he left his seat in the Chamber of Deputies to participate in La Casa de los Famosos, arguing that his actions damage the party’s image. The precautionary measure will remain in effect while the party’s disciplinary process continues.

The February 24 resolution establishes that the action is intended to prevent further harm to the party, as the conduct is deemed a serious violation.

“It is noted that citizen Sergio Mayer Bretón is participating in the reality show without returning to fulfill his obligation as a popular representative elected under Morena. This, for personal interests, could preliminarily constitute serious violations of party regulations, as it contravenes the principles of popular sovereignty, honesty, unity, and integrity that guide the conduct of those who hold the status of protagonists of the true transformation,” the document states.

“Such conduct, on a preliminary basis, poses a real and latent risk to the party’s internal unity, its public image and political strategy, as well as the values upon which it is founded, without this implying any prejudgment regarding his responsibility,” it added.

The Commission insisted that the persistence of public allegations and the absence of a preventive measure increase the risk of deepening confusion among party members, undermining the principle of unity, and weakening confidence in the party’s internal mechanisms of control and discipline.

Sergio Mayer justified his request for a leave of absence from the Chamber of Deputies to join the entertainment program La Casa de los Famosos, stating that his participation aims to send a positive message to the Latino community in the context of the relationship our country maintains with the United States.

Likewise, after requesting leave and stepping away from his duties as a federal lawmaker on February 17, the actor expressed confidence that this type of television program serves as a platform to showcase the values and principles of public figures.

The leave of absence from Congress was granted a few days after the start of the second regular legislative session, and once he joined the Telemundo television production, the lawmaker faced various allegations regarding the abandonment of his legislative responsibilities to participate in the reality show.

Complaint Filed Against Sergio Mayer

Ana Lilia Ceballos, a federal deputy and Morena party member, filed a complaint against Congressman Sergio Mayer Bretón, demanding that he be investigated for allegedly violating the party’s statutes and doctrinal principles.

Through her X account, Lilia Ceballos argued that “the prolonged absence from legislative duties, resulting from private and media-related activities, could constitute a violation of the principles of dedication to public service and the prioritization of the collective interest.”

“I respectfully request that this complaint be admitted; that the corresponding procedure be initiated to determine whether the described conduct constitutes a breach of party obligations; and, if applicable, that a duly founded and reasoned resolution be issued in accordance with the party’s statutes.”

Sergio Mayer’s alternate, Luis Morales Flores, was sworn in as a federal deputy following the legislator’s indefinite leave to participate in La Casa de los Famosos México.

The lawmaker, originally from Temoaya, State of Mexico, assumed the position after a lottery-based selection process and an affirmative action measure for Indigenous representation; he had previously challenged internal Morena decisions.
