Boxer Omar Chávez, son of former world champion Julio César Chávez, was released this Thursday, May 21, just hours after being detained Wednesday in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and transferred to the Aguaruto Penitentiary Center, according to the National Detention Registry of the SSPC.

The official report identifies the detainee as Omar Alonso Chávez Carrasco and states that the arrest took place at 8:53 a.m. The document also notes that the capture was carried out by officers from the State Preventive Police.

According to the registry, reviewed at 5:09 p.m. Central Time, Chávez Carrasco had been placed under the custody of the Aguaruto Penitentiary Center in the city of Culiacán, although the file still listed him as “in transit.”

The document lists the location as the complex situated along the Culiacán-Navolato highway at kilometer 9.5, in the Aguaruto area and neighborhood, between the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Federal Courthouse.

So far, authorities have not publicly disclosed the crime or reason for the boxer’s arrest. Local media also reported that the registry did not specify the cause of the detention.

The case gained national attention because Omar Chávez is one of the sons of Julio César Chávez, one of the most recognized figures in the history of Mexican boxing. Omar Chávez, known in the ring as “El Businessman,” has built a career marked by ups and downs and by the media attention surrounding his family name.

The arrest comes just months after his return to professional boxing. His last fight took place on January 24, 2026, when he defeated Colombian boxer José Miguel Torres by technical knockout at Arena Potosí in San Luis Potosí. The bout ended in the second round after the referee stepped in due to the sustained punishment dealt to Chávez’s opponent.

That victory came after a significant loss for Omar Chávez. In January 2025, he lost by unanimous decision to Misael “Chino” Rodríguez, also at Arena Potosí, in a 10-round fight. The judges scored the bout 96-94, 97-93, and 98-92 in favor of the Mexican Olympic medalist.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Chávez Carrasco family had not issued any public statement regarding the boxer’s detention.
