Security cameras captured the moment when a driver left a child on Huehuetan Street, between Tixcocob and Dzibalchen, in Tlalpan, on April 6 at 9:16 p.m.

In the footage, a man wearing jeans, white sneakers, and a dark T-shirt gets out of a sedan to leave the child behind, while the boy struggles with the adult.

The child, wearing a light blue hoodie, runs after the driver, who even backs up the car to avoid the minor.

No other people were on the street at the time; only a dog barking can be heard.

The images were shared in two videos. In the second one, someone can be heard saying, “Weren’t you not going to get out?” and the driver starts the vehicle, leaving the child behind.

Context: What happened to the child abandoned in Tlalpan and the driver?

After the video spread online, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported that authorities located the minor and the driver last night, who appears to be the boy’s father.

According to the man, he was playing with his son inside the vehicle when he let him out, drove a few meters down the same street, and allowed the boy to catch up so he could get back into the car.

Due to the events seen in the video, officers took the information of the adult and the minor and referred the case to a Public Ministry agent.

What is the punishment for abandoning a child in Mexico?

Abandoning a child is classified as a crime in the Federal Penal Code, in Articles 335 and 336.

Article 335: “Anyone who abandons a child incapable of caring for himself or a sick person, when they have the obligation to care for them, shall be punished with one month to four years in prison if no harm results, and shall also be deprived of parental authority or guardianship if the offender is an ascendant or guardian of the victim.”

Article 336: “Anyone who, without justified cause, abandons their children or spouse without the resources necessary to meet their basic needs shall be punished with one month to five years in prison, or a fine of 180 to 360 days; loss of family rights; and payment, as compensation for damages, of the amounts not provided in a timely manner by the accused.”
