BAJA CALIFORNIA.— Selina “N” was formally charged with aggravated homicide, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and child abduction following the violent events reported in the Hidalgo neighborhood of Mexicali, Baja California.

On April 10, Selina “N” allegedly forced her way into a home accompanied by hitmen she herself had hired to recover her two-year-old son. According to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the armed attack resulted in the death of the child’s uncle.

Investigations indicate that the woman was the intellectual author of the plan, whose objective was to take the child, who had been under the care of his father, a state Public Security agent.

More details of the case

Selina allegedly hired two acquaintances to carry out the plan, and they entered the residence armed.

During the intrusion, one of the attackers shot the child’s uncle, who died at the scene. Prosecutors maintain that the shooting occurred during the escape, after the attackers had already taken the child.

Additionally, during court hearings it was stated that Selina gave direct instructions during the attack, reinforcing the accusation that she acted as the mastermind in the homicide.

Following the incident, an Amber Alert was activated and a search operation was launched, which led to the child being found safe and to Selina’s arrest at a residence in Mexicali.

What Selina’s family says

Relatives of Selina have stated that she had previously reported her former partner for physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, without receiving an effective response from authorities.

According to these accounts, the custody dispute and the alleged lack of institutional action led the woman into a state of desperation.

The charging hearing

The charging hearing took place on April 18 at the Río Nuevo Justice Center. During the proceeding, the defense requested that the case be judged with a gender perspective, arguing that Selina acted as a “desperate mother” trying to see her son, and asked for the kidnapping charge to be dropped.

For her part, Judge Karla Violeta Fierros Domínguez decided to reclassify the charge of aggravated kidnapping to unlawful deprivation of liberty. This determination was made after considering that the detention of a woman during the incident was not intended for exchange, but rather to facilitate the suspect taking the child.

What did Selina say?

Selina “N” acknowledged having made a mistake but justified her actions as stemming from depression and anxiety caused by not having seen her son since December 20, 2025.

However, the Public Prosecutor’s Office presented evidence linking her to the events and revealed that she faces other ongoing investigations, including:

Attempted homicide against her former partner (the child’s father).
Breaking and entering.
Property damage, after allegedly setting her former partner’s vehicle on fire.

After evaluating the evidence presented, the judicial authority upheld pretrial detention for Selina “N.” A six-month period was also granted for the completion of the supplementary investigation, so formal proceedings are set to resume in October.
