Mexico’s Security Cabinet confirmed two fatalities in the shooting reported this Monday, April 20, at the Pyramid of the Moon in the Teotihuacán archaeological zone. One of those killed is a Canadian woman and the other is the man who opened fire.
Among the injured are tourists of Colombian and Russian nationality. In total, four people were wounded by gunfire, two others were injured as a result of falls, and one more suffered a nervous breakdown. One of the injured is a minor.
Earlier, tourists who were at the Teotihuacán archaeological site shared video of the moment a man shot at other people at the Pyramid of the Moon.

In one of the videos circulating on social media, a woman can be heard screaming for someone to call the police. “Call the police,” she shouts, as gunshots are heard.
Other videos also circulating online show an armed man on the pyramid’s platform and several visitors lying face down on the ground. According to authorities, the shooter turned the gun on himself and died.

At the base of the pyramid, other people recorded what was happening amid uncertainty.

What do we know about the shooter at the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán?
In videos shared by witnesses, the shooter appears to be a middle-aged man wearing a plaid shirt and cargo-style pants.
Information from the Security Cabinet indicates the man fired into the crowd. One of the shots struck a 32-year-old Canadian woman, who died at the archaeological site.
The man then shot himself and also died. Authorities say the shooter did not have identification documents, so his identity has not been established.
Claudia Sheinbaum condemns shooting in Teotihuacán
“What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us. I express my sincere solidarity with those affected and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian Embassy. I have instructed the Security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these events and provide all necessary support,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The president added that personnel from the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Culture are already on their way to the site to provide assistance and support, along with local authorities. “I am monitoring the situation and we will continue to provide timely updates through the Security Cabinet,” she said.
The Ministry of Culture, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), also condemned the attack.
