In less than half an hour, more than 11 Metrobús units passed through the Hidalgo station on Line 3. During that time, all the drivers honked—either to greet each other, warn a pedestrian, or alert a car that was about to collide with the bus.

However, this doesn’t happen only at that station; several others have also become scenes of traffic accidents. Over the past three years, Mexico City’s Metrobús has been involved in 5,220 collisions with pedestrians, cars, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

Through a public information request via the National Transparency Platform, La Silla Rota obtained a list of accidents and pedestrian crashes involving Metrobús units in Mexico City from 2023 through the first half of August 2025.

The data show that 2023 was the year with the highest number of crashes—2,042 in total; in 2024 there were 2,038, and so far in 2025, there have been 1,139.

From collisions to fatalities: Metrobús’ toll

The year with the highest number of pedestrian incidents was 2024 with 113 cases; in 2023, there were 110, and 45 have been reported so far this year.

Not all of these incidents, however, resulted in deaths.

In 2023, nine deaths were recorded: six caused by pedestrian accidents and three by collisions. The following year, there were four pedestrian deaths and four collision-related deaths. In 2025, only one fatality has been reported—at Tepalcates station, where a car crashed into a Metrobús unit.

Stations with the most incidents

In 2025, the stations with the highest number of crashes are Pantitlán on Line 4 with 47, Hidalgo on Lines 3, 4, and 7 with 37, and Archivo General de la Nación on Line 4 with 33.

Over the past three years, the stations with the most accidents have been Pantitlán (149), Buenavista (127), and Hidalgo (103).

Buenavista stands out among all stations: its number of crashes dropped from 55 to 20 this year. On the other hand, La Diana station on Line 7 matched its 27 incidents from 2024 again this year.

Between 2023 and 2025, there were 26 pedestrian accidents at Hidalgo, 21 at Pantitlán, and 12 at Archivo General de la Nación.

Why do Metrobús accidents happen?

According to Metrobús authorities, the most common causes of collisions over the past three years are:

  • Private vehicle invades Metrobús lane (1,620)
  • Metrobús performs maneuver (801)
  • Private vehicle rear-ends Metrobús (531)
  • The leading causes of pedestrian accidents are:
  • Pedestrian crosses suddenly (210)
  • Pedestrian in blind spot (16)
  • Lack of caution by driver (10)
